There’s nothing quite like a winter up North. Especially after surfing the waves of your life as golden afternoon light sends a kaleidoscope of colours towards your salty retinas further illuminating your stoke. Or you could be Peter Hayes, pictured here, notching up another tube and one for the memory bank. Photographer Russell Ord recently went on a hit and run mission during the school holidays with his son Kalani to get his fill on the other side of the lens.
“It was pretty good surf had by all during this day up North of WA, considering it’s school holidays and the camp is completely booked out,” recalls Russell Ord. The size of the swell and super low tides kept a few punters shore bound yarning in the carpark. I barely pressed the trigger all trip and was enjoying getting a few waves myself with my son Kalani but this one is of Peter Hayes who was a standout all week. Working with Tony Harrington on their new movie, Hayes went through a mountain of boards pulling into some crazy waves, Jacob Willcox, The Macualay’s Laura and Dave, Jake Patterson, Josh Burke, Jarrah Tutton and the Madison’s just to name a few were also enjoying the desert freight train.”
