 Bruce Irons. Pic: Ben Bugden Dodging the chaos and the crowds on this particularly busy North Shore day Bruce Irons timed this watery excursion to coincide with near nightfall. Like some kind of Buddhist Monk Bruce chose solitude and fading light as a form of meditation. It's what he chose to do within this quiet time that is so astounding – something along the lines of a mid-wall-under-the-lip-frontside-Bruce-Lee-Kung-Fu-suicide-kick. Composed and unfazed by the double overhead tomb about to consume him, the move appears to be both fresh and fool hardy. The fact his chosen location for this mini getaway was not wide of Backdoor Pipe at Aint's (It ain't Backdoor and it ain't Off The Wall) or even Off The Wall, but further down the beach at a nondescript sandbar/reef further on towards Rockpiles makes the move all the more interesting to surfer/trainspotters. This is not a place for the meek. A brutal no-mans-land where nine out of 10 waves slam unconventionally on an unforgiving shoreline. Bruce's 'Kung Fu' like Kick stall was snapped by Tracks deputy Editor Ben Bugden who described the move as both bizarre and radical in the extreme. "I had no idea what he was doing, but I'm glad I shot it", Ben said of the moment. Suicide stall? Kung Fu Kick? Whatever you wanna call it, it's just another reason to love the man and his all out approach to surfing.
