James Wood WINS Jim Beam Boardriders Cup 2012

Pics: Wes Lonergan Lennox Head welcomed the best Boardriders from the top clubs in Australia today, as the Jim Beam Boardriders Cup champion for 2012 was crowned under challenging conditions in the first final held out of Sydney in over a decade. Right on the opening Hooter the biggest set of the final came through and Chris Enever (North Narrabeen) wasted no time in nailing an impressive opening ride to put the pressure on his competitors; Asher Pacey (Kirra), James Wood (Le-Bah) and Eli Jacobs (Snapper Rocks). With underdog Enever staking his claim early, Asher Pacey answered back straight away with a series of cutbacks on yet another decent wave on the beachy at Lennox netting a solid 6.27. This set the standard for a final that was back and forth between four competitors who had surfed solidly all day. As the hacks from James Wood were delivered wave after wave, the local knowledge was proving the best and his decision to get as many waves as possible in the final proved a winning strategy. “I was so tired, I was catching every wave possible because the waves were so small I knew one would pick up and come through with the goods. But when I saw Chris (Enever) go for it in the end there I couldn’t block him and I was just hoping he didn’t get a good score”. Chris Enever wasn’t letting the $2000 and the chance to get a full page spread in tracks magazine go easily and in the last two minutes busted out some nice hacks, Jacobs and Pacey answered back just as powerful and the last minute was action packed. “It was a good day and great to start the week and for the Surftag finals, I knew it was going to be a pretty big day if I was going to go all the way I just tried to drink as much water as I could and I was still cramping up a bit and in the end”, said Wood who surfed five solid heats. “I had a really good heat just before the semi and catching lost of waves, we have a really good team this year and hopefully we can keep it going and come away with a win at the Club Challenge tomorrow”, said Wood who is surfing with his club in the National Finals which start tomorrow. Held outside of Sydney for the first time since the series began in 2001, the move north has been well received due to the high quality of beach breaks in the Ballina region. Local knowledge is sure to play a big part with Le-Ba (Lennox Ballina) again tomorrow along with Byron Bay, DBah, Kirra and Snapper Rocks relishing the opportunity to compete on home turf. The National series is Australia's largest team surfing competition featuring a combined prize pool of over $130,000 and gives club surfers an opportunity to compete with Australia's best surfers.
