Is Cruise Terminal Killer Blow for Kirra?

The Save Kirra campaign has been thrown a curve ball that has the potential to snuff the world’s best sand-bottom point for good. Billionaire Bob Ell wants to turn the southern end of the Gold Coast into a ginormous cruise ship terminal and mass tourist facility. The extraordinary plan, as detailed in the Gold Coast Bulletin last week, includes provisions for three hotels, a casino, three terminal berths, a water park, an underwater observatory, a new North Kirra Surf Club, a beach stadium and a super yacht marina. The cruise ship concept is reported to be envisioned for Tugun and is hoped to also serve as docking point for US navy ships.

The plan appears, to these eyes at least, to be about 300% too evil to ever happen but I don’t pretend to know much about Gold Coast politics. National Surfing Reserves Founder Brad Farmer is taking the threat seriously. “The proposal is for Kirra, not Tugun,” he says. “It would occupy 500 meters of public beach and extend 500 meters out to sea. It would totally disrupt the sand movement along Kirra Beach causing sand accumulate against its long southern wall smothering Kirra and eventually Greenmount beaches and their surf.”

Holy mother of god! An artist's impression of the proposed terminal.

“On the northern side North Kirra-Bilinga-Tugun and all beaches to the north would start to erode, starved of the natural sand movement from the south. The three-berth shipping terminal and 500 berth marina would also generate massive boat traffic in the area, including the large passenger liners. Its environmental and social impacts would be massive.”

Lois Levy, president of the Gold Coast and Hinterland Environment Council, says it is one of six plans for a cruise ship terminal currently being considered by the new Gold Coast mayor, Tom Tate. “Most people who live in the south of the city chose to do so because they appreciate the natural environment and they would like it to remain that way,” Levy says. “Other issues identified for the Bilinga proposal include the impact on ocean dynamics including the south- north long-shore sand drift. A sand bypass system would be necessary- who would pay for that? Gold Coasters already pay for the Tweed and Spit bypass systems. It would mean resumption of private property and alienation of public land as well as severe disruption to the multi-million dollar surfing industry.”

Given that Tom Tate has assured the KPI (Kirra Point Incorporated) that he’s in favour of rebuilding the Kirra Point groyne in order to get the much loved wave working again we can have some hope that common sense will prevail. It’d be worthwhile sending him an email or 3000 though. You’ll find him here: mayor@goldcoast.qld.gov.au

Note: You might think the terminal's a good idea? Either way leave comment below.

Would love to see them get a average cruise ship like the Pacific Dawn 70,000 tons, 245 metres in at the western end in a swell like we had this week!!

On the bright side if it became wrecked on the beach like the Costa Concordia, we would really have a tourist attraction as

A. You would have great difficulties in moving 70,000 tons and
B. It would just rust away

In reality in rough weather, any cruise ship would just bypass us and head to the safe port of Brisbane.

I wonder how the residents of Tugan feel about having their homes resumed. Its just unconstitutional, its against mabo and the whole vibe

Our newly elected mayor Mr Tom Tate, who has interests in the Hotel industry on the Gold Coast is the driving force behind this idea. The Gold Coast Bulletin, in my opinion, have also been strong supporters of a cruise ship terminal. The fact is that the last time a terminal was proposed at the Spit the petition opposing it was the largest petition ever put before Queensland parliament with some 35000 signatures. One could reasonably say the idea was about as popular as a turd in a thermos.I imagine this proposal will be even less popular and we have an excellent chance of defeating it if we all speak up!

The Mayor is the main reason this proposal has come up; he wants a dirty ship terminal and 5 casinos here - so developers will oblige.
Not only is beautiful Kirra being threatened, but so too the amazing GC Broadwater and the surf site TOS. It seems the very best, most precious breaks to our $1.3B surf industry are being targeted as collateral damage in this development grab-fest. Save Our Spit stopped ship terminal dredging that will gut TOS in 2005, but it's all back on again. And now our southern mates are under the pump too - BUT together, Gold Coasters will fight until these socialy, environmentally and economically bankrupt proposals are defeated.
If you email our 'developer-Mayor' - pls make sure you mention saving both TOS AND Kirra - & HELP us by liking www.facebook.com/SaveOurSpit thanks

Somehow the name "Yachter's Paradise" does not instill visions of glorious sandy beaches that your beautiful country is famous for. Why even propose this ? I doubt the local economy is unsound-therefore I envisage greed being the driving factor here- pure and simple. You could tell this interfering Welshman to keep his nose out but without people like myself who like travelling to your great country to visit glorious unspoilt coastal areas and pump our hard earned crust into your economy surely you would not be sitting on the moneypot you now propose to use to decimate a wonderous natural phenomenon in the interest of lining a few pockets. I hope you get laughed out of court- but I doubt you will as your financial clout will ensure the right people are swayed. I hope I'm wrong. Good luck to all that oppose this.
