Surf Commentators – who do you love?
By Col Bernasconi | 01 November 2012

Some of the talking heads who may or may not be interested in the dream job of cruising the world and critiquing the world's best surfers.

The current crop of talking heads delivering our surfing commentary from ASP World Championship Tour events are a motley crew. From heat to heat you’ll hear (and sometimes see) everyone from former pros to hired guns and even corporate cronies.

The reason for this ever-changing splatter of personalities is the current ASP event media agreement which stipulates the event licensee owns not only naming rights but also the right to deliver television broadcasts and live webcasts (and beach commentary) how they see fit.

Considering these colossal surfing festivals cost somewhere between two and three million dollars to stage, it shouldn’t be a struggle to comprehend their feelings of righteousness – their event, their marketing message, their call.

Basically the decision as to who mans the headsets at each event (at present) falls solely on the shoulders of these event licensees. They hold cart blanche over the decision of each and every appointment. Or they allocate that power to one of their trusted head commentators. There are no official ASP commentators.

Well, that’s all to be flipped on its head.

In 2014 the ASP’s new deal with ZoSea takes affect. This partnership is to take the sport (yes, it’s a sport folks), to the next level i.e. the masses. For better or worse, our baby is all grown up (nearly), and heading out into the big bad world.

Apart from bigger novelty cheques (with more zeros) this new deal will also usher in the new era of blanket coverage of all events. That means the same commentators at every event bar the odd special guests – event commentator wildcard if you like.

So, this begs the question; who should these newly employed full time commentators be?

When it comes to surfing commentary we all have our favourites and not so favourite (to put it mildly). If you’ve ever followed social media chatter on the subject you’d find some pretty passionate, and often humorous, views on the credibility of some getting air right now. As a commentator it’s impossible to please everybody.

So, who gets the gig? Who’s the lead anchor? What type of coverage do you want? Do you want beige blazers and puffy hair and stiff necks? Or half a dozen casual experts who ooze confidence and display hyperactive tendencies?

The unified ASP media coverage agreement looks set to take affect in 2014 – so the time to speak up and make some noise is now...

Who do you love?

Who do you loathe?

BEST: Occy is the man, Martin Potter, Shimo, Egan, Gerlach, Mel, Peter King for sure. Alex Gray is good for some laughs.

WORST: Joel Turpel is a big KOOK. Terrible. If he is talking, I turn off the sound. Sal Masekela (does this guy even surf). Cut the locks, loser.

No mention of Chris Cote(x) yet? the guy is a twat, and must go, along with GT, who, I imagine, has not been near an example of the latter in a while? Sean Doherty is a larf and needs a guernsey. No doubt, now that one outfit has paid for the full rights, there will be no more free streaming webcasts.

If joe turple is commentating every event next year I will be watching a lot less of the world tour. Please leave it the way it is. If it does change then a number of announcers are required. Variety is what keeps it entertaining.

Let me preface this by saying that speaking about any subject other than a wave being ridden when a wave is in fact being ridden is retarded. In a sport with such lulls why would an announcer not stop the diatribe -and call the fkn wave kook. Any commentators that continue to talk and not call a live wave are blowing it. Same for cutting to commercial or staying with an interview as waves go ridden is just dumb business.
Why would you have programming over excitment? What other sport does that? None. Because it's stupid.
Respect that surfing is the shit and let the surfing carry the sport.

Martin Potter fine

Joe Turple good/slow

Brad Gerlach livable- insightful/weirdish

Peter Mel don't really feel it

Ronnie Blakey Aussie Turpel?

Sean Doherty Cool

Reggae Ellis don't recall

Nathan Webster Him either- in the booth when?

Tom Whitaker Livable

Barton Lynch Nopey dopey. "Wow! Look at that! Amazinnng"

Marty Thomas Same

Dylan Slater Fine

Luke Egan Fine

Chris Cote Fun as the color guy

Dave Mailman ?

Todd Kline not sure about this guy. Probably the best among the ESPN-style guys. But I don't like ESPN style.

Mark Occhilupo Great as color guy

Dino Andino No gracias

Toby Martin OK

Shea Lopez absolutely stinks, tongue tied, stiff, stupid, and so damned full of himself. Ugggh, can't understand what Vans sees in this idiot. Paul Fisher, crossed eyed troll and totally unfunny. Wassel, verbal diarrhea. Doherty/Ellis screaming and yelling and NOT funny, Rob Machado thinks he's so f'ing cool. Yeah right... take a bath once in a while boy. Jake Patterson and Spencer Hargreaves, clueless and giggly. Two crash dummies. Good but booooring; Egan, Blakey, Walker, Kliney. Best are Dave Stanfield ( a real broadcast pro), Joe Turpel (seamless delivery), Pottz, Beau Hodge, Barton Lynch, Ross Williams. Wes Laine was excellent at ECSC.

Won't say anything about aussies or US commentators...but those two french guys must do something else, they're boring, not funny when they try to be, and unable to translate an interview or anything else. So I can't hear the guy being interviewed, but I do hear the bull... those two guys are saying...

Change the french commentators and I'll stop listen to english or portuguese webcast.

Joe Turpel sounds like the sort of guy you'd want your daughter to bring home - safe and kinda sweet. Shame he's boring as batshit. On another level though is big Louie - that monotone drawl could put a hyperactive 2 year old to sleep. As for GT, I'm amazed heat winners don't paddle up the coast rather than come in and face this gormless idiot.

Pete Mel seems pretty good, Occy hilarious and Reggae entertaining. BL for sure. Keiren Perrow would have to be a walk up start when he's done with the tour if he wants it.

Wasselhoff Hilarious and to the point.
Kamalei Alexander. Keeps it totally real.
Pottz: Was the man back int he day and still is.
Doherty Gregarious, insightful and likable. Get's my vote for full timer.
Occy, Hilarious, a bit loose, and pretty much made for the job.
Pancho LIkable, knowledgable and says it the way it is.

Definitely DO NOT WANT TO HEAR EVER AGAIN!:
Joe Turplle. Huh? How did this squeaky non stop talking voice get a gig in the first place?

GT Who is this tool?

Peter King. Failed as a pro surfer, as a musician, as a photographer, and now botching beach commentary as well

What about Shea Lopez??? I think he's done a great job.
Also Peter Mel, Sean Doherty, and Martin Potter.

Please for the love of god, no more GT, Joe Turpel, Schmoo or Stansfield. Those guys are all insufferable and are more interested in putting pro surfer balls in their mouths then what is actually going on.

Have one Straight Man, like a Joel Turple, Ronnie Blakey to anchor the show, throw to ads, deliver the stats. Then have one crazy, off the cuff guy (Gerr, Wassel,Occy)to provide the laughs. One hot chick to do the beach interviews.

31 educated student
The List: Martin Potter, Joe Turpel, Peter Mel, Sean Dougherty, Pancho Sullivan, with guest Occy, also stansfield gives some good stats but can get annoying
Beach Interview: Toby, GT, Repogle why? because they are confident speakers
Wildcard: Wassel (originality)

Side Note: ok first off, quiksilver wtf were you thinking putting damien fahrenfort in as beach interview, it was almost comical to listen to the tremor in his voice (learn to speak br-br-bru)... anyway now that thats out of the way, like football there has to be at least one or two female analysts (erin andrews) but thats okay, because it adds some allure
Female: Sage erickson has done a good job at sc so i pick her

Those employed she IN NO WAY be affiliated with the surfers and or the companies. It shits me to listen to guys like Schmoo who manage guys like Jordy, their blatant favourtism and one sided commentary sucks balls. I'm sure a lot of the guys on the list could and should be eliminated based on their alliance with particular surfers.

Shmoo is always stoked, has a lot of knowledge and a good delivery. Joe Turpel is kind of the steady hand. Blakey is good too. I'm just glad you didn't include Gerlach on the list... that dude puts me to sleep and he always looks like he needs a bath. Anyone who can commentate without mispronouncing the surfers names would be a plus. Top 3 are Shmoo, Turpel, Blakey and have some others fill in here and there to mix it up.

Mick Lowe would be good - as long as he is running the bowl cut . Maybe Shane Herring as special behind the scenes commentator and Laird Hamilton for health and nutrition input. Send Occy out into the lineup with camera and microphone and you have your whole broadcast team right there. Oh, and Matt Branson for some special "after hours" alternative lifestyle documenting.

LIKES: Occy for sure! All passion and epic delivery of the English language, and who could ever get tired of that voice? Martin Potter for the insightful way he informs the audience of the greatness of what they're actually watching. Dave Wassel (re: Volcom Fiji Pro 2012 commentary concerning Gabby Medina). Ronnie Blakely, for his youth orientated knowledge of all things up and coming in the surfing world, keeping it fresh. DISLIKES: Any commentator who utters the phrase "Oh he looks really solid on his board" (when a surfer is losing a heat) OR "He's pretty much one of the best surfers in the world right now" DURRRRRRR!!
