A few years ago I did a boat trip for Waves magazine; we were filming Eight Days Eight Slaves (the sequel to Seven Days Seven Slaves). One of the surfers on that particular trip in the Mentawai Islands was an old friend of mine from Ventura, California, Mr Tim Curran. Despite an unhealthy attraction to watching men beat themselves senseless in the ultimate fighting arena, Tim’s a very cool bloke and all in all a good Christian lad. Timmy likes to sip a little red wine at night, lay low and cruise. When it comes to surfing however – he goes batty. On this particular trip I witnessed (and you can too if you find the movie), Tim come up with about ten aerial variations I’d never seen before. Quite a treat when you're in the middle of nowhere.

On reflection though, I realised that Tim, who is an accomplished singer songwriter who sings his heart out, was often carrying a guitar around our boat like it was a part of his person – but never once did he play us a song? How many rock stars could have contained themselves from busting out a song or two in that situation? I’ll tell ya, not fucking many.

Lucky for you and I, Timmy gives away his heart felt music for free.
