What could be more important to a surfer than the board that they ride?
Finding the right board for yourself will rely heavily on two major factors: your weight and your level of ability. However, if you are considering buying a custom-made board then you need to talk closely with your shaper of choice.
The key to getting the right board is quite simple: it's a continual process of communication and feedback with your shaper. Unless you surf right in front of your shaper's house, he'll have no idea how your new board goes for you unless you give him feedback. Tell him what you like and dislike about your board, don't be afraid to hurt his feelings. Above all, they want you to be happy with your custom-shaped boards so your honesty will be appreciated. Despite the temptation to describe yourself as the next Kelly Slater, be brutally honest about your ability. Tell your shaper how often you surf and describe the type of waves you ride most often. Then you can be quite confident that your shaper will be shaping the right board for you.
