The instagram and facebook accounts of several Bali expats literally lit up last night with reports of a fire that had destroyed several homes and warungs on the Bukit peninsula yesterday. Long serving Rip Curl Indonesian representative, Pete Matthews, was one of the worst affected and posted the following report on his instagram account…
“Tragedy struck today, our house along with all of the homestays, and hotels down at Padang Padang / Impossibles burned down this afternoon. No one died or was injured and thats what counts. It’s a heavy thing to lose all of your worldly possessions but in the big picture it’s nothing as long as you have your family and health….thanks for all the calls and concern. #PadangPadang”
The cause of the fire is not yet known but the incident raises further concerns about the safety of the increasingly overcrowded Bukit peninsula. Commenting on the fire over email photographer and Indo expat Jason Childs stated,
“… The sad thing it was Balangan warungs on the beach that burnt last year, now Padang Padang. Scary thought if it happens a Bingin at night how many people could die?”
