Stories Behind The Shot: Sumatran Surfariis, Vol V

Captain Chris ‘Scuzz’ Scurrah recounts some standout sessions in the Ments.

While we don’t like to name waves I want to give credit to Jody here. We called it Jody’s for years, as he did really well keeping it quiet and made up excuses to boats travelling the busy route past this spot and for the guests and crew for not playing the “one up game” and boasting. Instead he made believable excuses and schooled everyone to just not talk about it so they could come back and get it alone next time.

It’s something we do and have done for a long time and as the saying goes, “Loose lips sink ships”. It’s such a rare thing to have a real jewel you can sneak off to and especially for the guys who have been here so long and had it when it was very uncrowded. To be able to surf a world class wave with just a few of your mates makes a whole trip.

Getting back to this wave though. The way the peak stands up is incredible – a cobra head that rears up so quickly with such momentum it will throw a beautiful fan of offshore spray on windless mornings. The drop is super exciting and if you get it when all the primo conditions occur and alone you are in for a day to remember.

Injuries have been had here and I’ve heard some amazing stories from mates taking pros here on very heavy days when conditions aren’t perfect. There are another couple of waves close by, one of which we had Lopez and Lynchy out together, just two 60 plus year olds threading tubes in front of each other.
