Who doesn’t love leftovers? Extra morsels of goodness that often taste better the second time round. Tracks video dude and aquatic wombat, Nick Colbey is the man behind our current film – Loco Loco – on sale now with the January issue of Tracks.
Set in tropical Indonesia with wave shredding playboys Mikey Wright, Chippa Wilson, Clay Marzo, Matt Meola, Billy Kean & Luke Hynd it features everything from hi fi wave parks to tubular dreams.
Obviously there was always going to be some clips that hit the cutting room floor and this footage, care of Dan Norkunas of Attractive Distractions fame – also aboard the trip – is a rare treat for us digital junkies. I asked Colbes what it is really like filming the world’s best surfers in far remote regions like the Mentawais.
“It was cool filming next to Dan, sharing the experience,” he says.
“We got fucked up a couple of times getting into to land. One day it was getting late, the sun had already set and it we were the last ones left (naturally!), and we had to paddle all our expensive camera gear back to the boat.”
“I saw this set approaching and I jumped into the dingy and saw the fear in his his eyes as he locked eyes with it. Dan was on top of Chippa’s soft top with a dry bag holding his Red Camera and we were lucky to just scratch over the set…”
“It was kind of funny after we got back to the boat. So I guess you can say we swapped stories, swapped footage and in exchange saved cameras.”
